12/20/2023 0 Comments Middle earth map from bookIn my immature youth I avoided much fiction in the mistaken belief that it would unduly cramp any creative impulses I aspired to I now see that a great work of fiction frequently borrows freely from its predecessors while transforming and transfiguring the material, and that wider reading of fiction then may well have been to my advantage. It’s a poor work, I feel, that gives nothing back to its reader. The strength of a book, sometimes even its worth, lies often in its resonances, like the echoes in a cavernous space rebounding back to the caller. Some will prove extremely dangerous, and the travellers will often only survive by the skin of their teeth but in the main the places of safety will be shown to be where several days may be spent and plans laid almost ignoring the urgency of the mission. These locations will by and large feature habitations, whether in buildings or in woodland settings. In a there-and-back journey such as the hobbits undertake there will be many rests taken, in the open, in overnight camps or rough shelters, but temporary stops are not what I want to discuss instead I shall compare and contrast the places designed for respite, rest and recuperation between Hobbiton and the Rauros Falls, where the fellowship breaks up. I now want to consider stopping places, those places where Frodo and his companions, and certain others, stay for a time during the course of The Fellowship of the Ring. I’ve also looked at the significance of locations, in particular crossing places and portals. I’ve discussed the place of allegory, Tolkien’s use of colour, morality in the trilogy, and the One Ring. In my series Talking Tolkien I’ve looked at several motifs that have occurred to me so far during my sixth read of The Lord of the Rings. Tree of Life stained glass window design after Louis Tiffany

The Shaft: Spray paint the entire shaft a light brown or tan color to give it a natural look. Also, it’s best to do this the same day you spray the sliver paint, otherwise the paint will harden and be much more difficult to scrape off. If you want to give the blade an appearance that it is beginning to rust, all you need to do is take a tool like the edge of a pair of pliers or a wrench and carefully scrape away some of the silver paint to reveal specks of the brown primer underneath.ĭon’t get too carried away doing this, just a few hints here and there that there is some rust beginning to form. Give the beveled edge a coat of shiny silver acrylic paint for more added realism. This will give the blade more depth, and make it look "used". Once the blade is dry, mix a small amount of silver acrylic craft paint with a small drop of black, and dry brush streaks perpendicular to the edge of the blade. Flip the blade and repeat for the other side. Give the primer at least an hour or two to dry and then spray a couple coats of silver paint. Wait for it to dry, then flip it over and repeat for the other side. Give the blade a few good coats of brown or rust colored primer. Wrench, pliers or other tool with a blunt metal edge.

Jordannah Elizabeth, Bring to the Table (self-released). So for the diehards, Pom Pom is a treat, a kaleidoscopic journey through Pink’s obsessions and neuroses that hangs together better than any album he’s released thus far. With his scorched-earth press campaign, Pink has drastically narrowed his fan base, leaving only those who sing his praises in private. Pink’s penchant for Ann Coulter-esque trolling is beyond gross, but if you dismiss him solely on baiting the media by calling Grimes “stupid and retarded,” then how can you ever listen to Rumours knowing that Lindsey Buckingham dragged Carol Ann Harris’ down a gravel driveway, one hand holding her head and the other gripping a steering wheel? As with Fleetwood Mac, the psychodrama is inseparable from the music, and golden pop like “Plastic Raincoats in the Pig Parade,” “White Freckles,” “Put Your Number in My Phone,” and “Dayzed Inn Daydreams” floats above the petty pull quotes and drug-related hearsay. Pom Pom-a fitting final testament should he die before age 40-is crude, lewd, and irresistibly catchy, another fat batch of genre-melting pop brilliance most reminiscent of Prince’s Sign o’ the Times. Ariel Pink, speed freak and casual misogynist is inseparable from Ariel Pink, primo tunesmith. Harris has supernatural talent, and we’re all blessed and the better for it. Her voice runs circles inside my head, and I hear her music everywhere now-in heat pipes, in the wind, in white noise. Her voice is without peer, singing within the thin range of the main line on “Clearing” or the angelic falsetto on “Call Across Rooms.” Harris’ words and the way she phrases them are as massive and affecting as they were hidden beneath bushes of digital fuzz “it’s funny when we fuck up/no one really has to care” and “I have a present to give you when we finally figure it out” are two lines that have stuck with me ever since I first heard them. Above all, Harris is an incredible songwriter with a natural ear for melodies that are devastating and hauntingly beautiful, often comprised of less than half a dozen notes. On her most direct-in terms of chords and lyrically speaking-record yet, Harris communicates the same emotional isolation and intimacy without any of the reverb, delay, or tape loops that have appeared on every other Grouper release (save for the final track “Made of Air,” recorded in 2004). Like seeing a new color or discovering a new star, Ruins unveils yet another side of Liz Harris’ genius. If I’m sure about anything, though, it’s that whoever or whatever (what’s up, amniotic AI sentiences?) is left alive after humanity perishes in a plague will have several millennia of underexposed Bandcamp/Soundcloud/YouTube bounty to feed on. Maybe that says something about the rough decade we’re gliding towards the middle of, or the tumultuous year we’re about to close the door on forever. This year, we’re down to three voters, and the only platter at least two of us could agree on was Grouper’s bleakly entrancing Ruins, a repeat of our love affair with 2013’s The Man Who Died in His Boat. In Splice Today’s 2013 music poll, we had six (!) voters, and two intersecting points of consensus. Dividers may drive artistic innovation, but at this moment in time, what we’re in dire need of is more uniters-and I sure don’t mean the sort of unification U2 wrought this year with a record nobody really wanted for free. When a “what’s your all-time hip-hop top five” discussion on Facebook can’t get five or six responses deep without two or three sub-underground outliers drifting into the fray, is there hope for any of us? Things have reached the point where I’ve been honestly stunned this year whenever anyone has heard of anything I’ve written about or repped on social media. It’s gotten to the point where talking about music with strangers isn’t even vaguely fun anymore: they haven’t heard what you’re flipping out over, you haven’t heard what they’re flipping out over, and neither of you have enough free time to engage in the requisite opposition research necessary to make meaningful connections. Deeper and deeper we descend into the era of low-to-no-consensus, the Long Tail lengthening and growing ever coarser, all the “this post-monoculture shit sucks” op-eds piling up willy-nilly, nobody able to agree on anything. 12/19/2023 0 Comments Invisible statue saleThe invisible sculpture was expected to rack in between $6,000 and $9,000, but the hype surrounding the item pushed the final selling price to $18,300. Though that price is relatively low in the art world, it’s pretty significant when you consider the work is an “immaterial sculpture,” meaning someone dropped thousands of dollars on an invisible piece that is literally made of nothing.Īccording to ArtNet, “Lo Sono” went up for sale last month at the Italian auction house Art-Rite. The Italian artist has been making waves over the past few days with his boundary-pushing piece titled “Lo Sono (I Am),” which recently sold for more than $18,000. “In other words, I sought to create an ambiance, a pictorial climate that is invisible but present.Salvatore Garau reminds us there are no rules in the art world. “I wished to create, establish, and present to the public a sensible pictorial state within the confines of a picture gallery,” he said in 1959. His “zone” receipts were a continuation of an earlier work he called The Void- a white-washed, empty room in a Parisian gallery. Known for his 1960 photograph Leap into the Void, a composite of two separate images that showed the artist falling from a tall wall, Klein pushed the boundaries of viewers’ perceptions of reality in his art. When they showed the reliquary, and the gold inside of it, to a painter, he soon identified the work as Klein’s. The nuns kept the work of art anonymous until a 1979 earthquake destroyed the convent’s historic frescoes. He gave the offering to nuns at an Italian convent devoted to the saint. He used some for his Monogolds series and enclosed gold leaf from the first four sales in an anonymous reliquary devoted to St. Klein put the gold that wasn’t thrown into the Seine to good use. According to Sotheby’s, the buyer was a “private European collector” and it’s “too early to say” whether they’ll pay in crypto. The sale far surpassed the initial estimated range of $300,000 to $550,000 after fees, the buyer will pay $1.2 million. To pay homage to that connection, the auction house accepted-for the first time ever-cryptocurrency payments for the artwork. “If we add that Klein kept a register of the successive owners of the ‘zones,’ it is easy to find here another revolutionary concept-the ‘blockchain.’” “Some have likened the transfer of a zone of sensitivity and the invention of receipts as an ancestor of the NFT, which itself allows the exchange of immaterial works,” Sotheby’s wrote in its auction catalog. Signed by Klein and dated December 7, 1959, the piece of paper gives the recipient ownership of a Zone de Sensibilité Picturale Immatérielle. Former gallery owner Loïc Malle eventually bought the piece, then put it up for auction along with over 100 other items from his private collection.ĬNN’s Oscar Holland writes that the receipt, which is less than eight inches wide, was designed to look like a banker’s check. The receipt has been shown at major European cultural institutions like London’s Hayward Gallery and Paris’ Centre Pompidou. That’s because he encouraged his buyers to burn them-part of a ritual in which buyers asserted themselves as the “definitive owners” of their purchased “zone.” As part of the ritual, Klein would dump half the payment into the Seine while burning the receipt in the presence of witnesses.Īntiques dealer Jacques Kugel was the original owner of the receipt in question and is believed to be one of the few who didn’t burn the evidence of their purchase, reports Artnet’s Taylor Dafoe. Though Klein sold numerous receipts for Zones of Immaterial Pictorial Sensibility, few exist today. Now, six decades later, one of those receipts has sold for over $1 million at auction. Between 1959 and his death in 1962, he made one of the most outrageous artistic statements of his career, selling a series of receipts for invisible “zones” and accepting payment only in gold bullion. One of the key figures of the nouveau réalisme (New Realism) movement, Klein was a pioneer of conceptual art. Before NFTs upended the art world, the artist Yves Klein sold nothing in exchange for solid gold. 12/19/2023 0 Comments Battlefield 2042 ps5This game includes optional in-game purchases of virtual currency that can be used to acquire virtual in-game items. If you do want a car that's happier out of town, you'll probably be better opting for the bigger 130 engine or one of the diesel offerings. Officially the 100 returns 54.3mpg, but we suspect it would be considerably lower than that in the real world if you regularly drive on the motorway. This isn’t great for fuel economy, though. It’s not as noticeable on the move and, apart from a slight three-cylinder thrum during heavy acceleration, it’s fairly refined – even at motorway speeds when a lack of a sixth gear means it’s running close to 3000rpm. While there’s no noticeable vibration through the pedals – a trademark of older three-cylinder cars – we did notice a slight vibration through the front seats at a standstill. It’s got plenty of power to keep up with traffic on open roads, and is fairly refined. The three-cylinder 1.0-litre TCe 90 engine will be sufficient for the majority of buyers. Looking for a second opinion? Why not read heycar’s Renault Captur review. Prices range from £22,000 for a 90PS TCe Evolution model to nearly £33,000 for an R S Line 160PS PHEV. Even entry-level models get full LED headlights and cruise control, auto lights and wipers, climate control, keyless entry and wireless phone charging. The Captur scores highly in the value-for-money stakes. We’d stick with the standard six-speed manual gearbox, which has a smooth action that makes the seven-speed dual-clutch seem surplus to requirements. You can choose from petrol and plug-in hybrid petrol models, but the 140PS TCe petrol does everything you need – it’s plenty quick, has enough grunt for shifting the car when it’s loaded and will return more than 40mpg all day long. There’s an engine for all requirements, too. It’s not as direct as a Ford Puma, but it’s more comfortable. The Renault’s upright driving position and light controls make it easy to drive, but the weighty steering means it doesn’t feel flighty at speed. Link your phone to the infotainment screen, get on the move and you’ll find there’s very little to whinge about. All models get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – so you can mirror your phone’s display and use its apps on the car’s big screen – while top-of-the-range cars swap the standard seven-inch display for a portrait-style 9.3-inch effort.Īdmittedly, it looks like someone has erected a tombstone on your dashboard top, but it’s easy to use. The infotainment is also pretty impressive. Line models feature Alcantara-look upholstery and splashes of aluminium trim. Naturally, the further up the range you go, the nicer it gets – R. Interior quality is great, with soft-touch plastics up front and neat touches such as knurled stalk caps. Renault has also been generous with storage space, with a large bin between the front seats and decent-sized pockets in all four doors. It’s a handy feature that means you’ll have no issues getting tall adults in the back, but equally can slide the rear seats forward to increase boot capacity when needed. Practicality has been a focus for the Captur’s designers, and the current model is slightly longer, wider and taller than its predecessor, giving it more interior space.įront-seat passengers won’t feel cramped at all, and in the rear a sliding bench allows you to prioritise boot or passenger space. It takes a lot to stand out in this crowded small SUV segment, but the Captur offers cheerful looks and a feelgood interior that mean it’s one of the better options. That makes it an alternative to the Skoda Kamiq, the big-selling Ford Puma and another French challenger, the Peugeot 2008. Sharing a platform with the new Clio and also the Nissan Juke, the Renault Captur has dimensions that sit at 4227mm long, 1797mm wide and 1576mm tall. |
